Yadegar Asisi’s Panorama of a divided Berlin displaces the visitor into the daily life in the vicinity of the Berlin Wall on a fictitious autumn day in the 1980s. The alternative life in the SO 36 district of West Berlin with its punks, squats, a laager or a petting zoo in Kreuzberg is completely separated from life in East Berlin – albeit only a stone’s throw away. Death strips and border fortifications divide East and West Berlin, East and West Germany, Capitalism and Communism. The Panorama shows both the banal routineness and subtle horror of normality in the divided city. The panoramic experience is rounded off with the accompanying music by film composer Eric Babak and sound effects reflecting the era and the setting in the scene.
In the foyer, over a hundred photo motifs from contemporary witnesses of the period of the Berlin Wall and the days of its fall in 1989 attune the visitor to the project.
